The Lion King (2019) Verdict Video

About the movie: You already know the plot of this movie. It’s not a true live-action remake. It’s just a different form of animation.

What we think: they’re going to be people who love this movie because it is “The Lion King.” That’s perfectly fine. The animation is beautiful, 99% of the film is indistinguishable from a true moving photograph. Truly a masterwork in the art department. Some of the characters lose what makes them feel essential to the story. Some reworks of the music don’t quite have the same finesse. The movie lacks emotion because of its photorealism, limiting the degree to which characters can actually display emotion. James Earl Jones, despite being an amazing actor, delivers his lines as if you were bored.

If you want to see this movie because you want to see it, you’re going to have a good time. If you’re trying to introduce a child to “The Lion King,” show them the beautifully animated 1994 masterpiece.

Verdict: if you’re a hard-core Disney fan, here to love the movie anyway. Everyone else: pass
